  2.            the                         Dentist 
  3.           Do? The                     dentist 
  4.         is a doctor                 who is specially 
  5.       trained to care             for teeth. When 
  6.     you visit your dentist      for a checkup, he 
  7.   or she will look at your    teeth and gums to check 
  8. for any problems. The dentist also wants to make sure 
  9.   your teeth are developing   properly as you grow. 
  10.     It's important to           visit your dentist 
  11.       every 6 months              to make sure 
  12.         you're taking               good care 
  13.           of your                     teeth 
  14.            and                         that 
  15.             your                        teeth 
  16.            and                         gums 
  17.           are healthy.                What 
  18.         Happens at                  the Dentist's 
  19.       Office? After               your name is 
  20.     called in the waiting       room, you'll go into 
  21.   an exam room and sit        down in a big comfortable 
  22. chair that is like a huge   recliner. The chair will 
  23.   have a place to rest        your head and lots of 
  24.     room for you to stretch     out your legs. Next 
  25.       to the chair                may be a little 
  26.         sink with                   a cup that 
  27.           you can                     use to 
  28.            rinse                       out 
  29.             your                        mouth 
  30.            as                          your 
  31.           teeth                       are being 
  32.         cleaned.                    During the 
  33.       exam, your teeth            will be cleaned, 
  34.     flossed, and checked        for cavities. Here's 
  35.   what will happen: Cleaning  and Flossing One of the 
  36. first people you'll meet    at the dentist's office is 
  37.   the dental hygienist        (say: hi-gee-nist). A 
  38.     dental hygienist            is a person who knows 
  39.       all about keeping           teeth and gums 
  40.         clean and                   healthy. 
  41.           The dental                  hygienist 
  42.            will                        look 
  43.             inside                      your 
  44.            mouth                       to 
  45.           make                        sure 
  46.         your teeth                  are growing 
  47.       properly and                your gums are 
  48.     healthy. A bright,          overhead light will 
  49.   shine down into your        mouth like a giant flashlight 
  50. so the dental hygienist can get a good look at your teeth 
  51.   and gums. The dental        hygienist will clean 
  52.     and polish your teeth,      using tiny dental 
  53.       tools like a                tooth scraper, 
  54.         mirror, and                 special toothbrush. 
  55.           The tooth                   scraper 
  56.            removes                     plaque 
  57.             (say:                       plak) 
  58.            from                        your 
  59.           teeth.                      Plaque 
  60.         is a thin,                  sticky layer 
  61.       of bacteria (say:           bak-teer-ee-uh) 
  62.     that grows on your          teeth after you eat. 
  63.   Plaque that isn't removed   from your teeth can cause 
  64. decay, or cavities. Next    comes brushing and flossing. 
  65.   The dental hygienist        will brush your teeth 
  66.     with a special toothbrush   and toothpaste. The 
  67.       toothbrush has              a small round 
  68.         tip that                    moves around 
  69.           and around                  to clean 
  70.            your                        teeth. 
  71.             The                         toothpaste 
  72.            will                        taste 
  73.           a little                    like 
  74.         your own                    toothpaste 
  75.       at home, but                it will feel 
  76.     a little grittier           - almost like sand. 
  77.   Then the dental hygienist   will floss your teeth 
  78. and show you the proper way to brush and floss your teeth 
  79.   at home. Checking for       Cavities During your 
  80.     visit, the dental           hygienist will take 
  81.       X-rays, or pictures,        of your teeth. 
  82.         X-rays are                  like super-human 
  83.           vision.                     They 
  84.            show                        any 
  85.             cavities                    hiding
